The Big Knit at Woking Shopping
Woking Shopping is bridging the generation gap with our FREE community knitting workshops for charity, set to take place later in the year, and we need your help!

Can You Pick Up a Stitch for The Woking Big Knit?

Woking Shopping is on the lookout for avid knitters to join the Woking Big Knit.

With many of us now having time on our hands at home, what better way to pass the time, AND also help others in a great cause.

The popular Woking shopping destination had originally planned to hold a mass community knitting event, with locals able to join-in to create little knitted bunnies out of pre-knitted squares. However with the current situation in mind, plans have had to change and the bunny-making will now happen later in the year.

In preparation for the rescheduled event, they need the community’s help.

They are calling on all those that have a knack with knitting needles to create some squares which will later be transformed into little knitted bunnies. The bunnies, once complete, will become ‘Buddy Bunnies’ and be given out to shoppers in partnership with national Mental Health charity, ‘Mind’ and local mental health charity ‘Learning Space’.

As many of members of the community now have time on their hands at home, Woking Shopping is inviting everyone to join in! The project is a great opportunity to start bridging the generation gap, encouraging older friends and relatives to pass-on forgotten skills to the younger generation and perhaps spark the love for a new hobby. For anyone totally new to knitting, lessons will also be provided via Woking Shopping’s social media.

Knitting is proven to have many health benefits – producing feelings of calm and happiness in those who participate in the practice, also lowering the heart rate and blood pressure. It exercises physical and cognitive skills as well as providing an output that provides a sense of satisfaction.

Woking Shopping hopes that this initiative has wide-reaching benefits for all those who contribute to this fantastic community project.

The project has already recruited the help of a number of local care homes including Gracewell, Coxhill Manor, Kingsleigh, Woking Homes and Jackmans Lodge, as well as Pins and Needles Knitting Group based at Byfleet Community Library.

So why not join Brenda, pictured, and see if you can help us reach our target of 1500 squares.

Rowen de Grauw, Customer Experience Manager, Woking Shopping says:
“The Big Knit project is a fabulous initiative involving multiple facets of the community to create something for such a worthwhile cause. It’s already creating a great feeling of community spirit and camaraderie amongst those already involved, so it would be lovely for that to grow.”
