Have a Sustainable Christmas

Back to News and Events

This Christmas, we’re making a festive difference at Woking Shopping. We’re working with a number of local charities including WWF, to shine a light on the environment and help you enjoy a more eco- friendly Christmas.

To give you a little helping hand, we’ve put together this guide of 12 easy tips to make your Christmas more thoughtful than ever!

Look after the tree that keeps on giving…

An artificial tree used for 3 years has a lower carbon footprint than a real tree. So look after your tree and it will look after the planet. Buy yours at stores like Wilko, TK Maxx and Sainsbury’s.

Timeless decorations rather than festive fad

When it comes to decorating your home for the festive season, it’s easy to get caught up with the latest trends. Instead, opt for timeless tree decorations that stand the test of time. Investment in quality trinkets can pay dividends for your purse, and the planet over time. Flying Tiger offer a fantastic range.

The cards of Christmas past

When all the celebrations are over, don’t throw your cards in the bin. Keep your eye out for our ‘Christmas Card Recycling Art Project’ in the New Year, or give them a new life as a gift tag or origami tree decoration in years to come…

Get gifted

Look out for more eco-conscious gift solutions in stores like Yankee Candle, Primark, Fat Face, Boots and Wilko which include soy wax candles, 100% sustainable cotton PJs, Hoodies made from recycled materials and bamboo beauty brushes.

Refuel with your re-usable cup!

Use your re-usable Woking coffee cup or purchase your own from our stores, to enjoy great discounts at a number of our hot drink providers as well as doing your bit for the planet!

An advent calendar that lives again…

Instead of buying the usual cardboard and plastic calendar, why not treat your little one to a calendar that lasts a lifetime which you can fill with their favourite treats each year.

Carry your shopping consciously

When you head into Woking for your festive shopping spree, don’t forget to take your re-usable bags to get all your precious purchases home.

Light up with LEDs

LED lights use an average of 75 per cent less energy and can last up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs, so if you haven’t already, make the switch to LEDs at stores like TK Maxx, Wilko and Sainsbury’s.

Recycled wrapping

It takes 50,000 trees to make the 8,250 tonnes of paper used across the UK at Christmas time. So look out for recycled rolls in stores like Paperchase and avoid the use of sticky tape, instead opting for natural cord and raffia.

Bring a bottle!

When you’re visiting Woking Shopping you can enjoy a refreshing water refill for FREE when you bring your own bottle. Simply top up as part of our ‘Refill Woking’ scheme to keep you going until the shopping’s done.

Shop local

By shopping close to home you’re reducing your carbon footprint and walking and cycling become more viable transport options – not to mention the health benefits too! Woking’s extensive bus network offers another more eco-friendly way to get around town.

Guilt-free festive feasts

Purchasing locally grown produce in Market Walk or organic options at Sainsbury’s will help you have a guilt-free Christmas.

Wishing you a very happy, conscious Christmas…
